The names of the soldiers who fell in Israel's wars

Captain Shmuel (Katron) Zigal Elrai, the son of Rebekah and Reuven

סרן שמואל (קטרון) ציגל אלראי בן רבקה וראובן

Shmuel was born on the 24th day of Nisan 1544 (May 28th, 1924) in the city of Hrubieszow, Poland, to a Zionist Hasidic family, and studied at a religious primary school. He immigrated to Israel with his parents in 1935 and lived in Tel Aviv. In Israel, he attended Yavneh High School, where he prepared for the matriculation exams, but he never graduated, due to his extensive involvement in the Hagana, which he had been a member of since joining the HaNoar HaOved (“the Working Youth”) movement. He completed two clerkship courses at the Certified Teachers Center and at the Fitman schools, and worked at Anglo-Palestine Bank in Tel Aviv. Shmuel traveled extensively throughout the country to familiarize himself with its landscapes, roads and riverbeds. Between 1942 and 1946, he worked as a security guard in Givat Rambam and in northern Tel Aviv, and in 1947, he commanded a military course. He participated in Operation Wingate Night, Operation Sharona, Operation Abu-Laban, and the capture of the Arab city of Yibneh.

Shmuel held senior positions in the Israel Defense Forces, commanding the B company of the Tel Aviv Hish Forces, after which he commanded an armored company and a Givati infantry company. Next, he commanded a battalion in another brigade and served as the adjutant of the Givati brigade. Lastly, he was a deputy battalion commander in the “Oded” brigade.

Private Eliezer Blender, son of Sarah and Menas

טוראי אליעזר בלנדר

Eliezer was born on the 7th of Adar 1, 5681 (February 15, 1921) in Poland, in a village near Hrubieszow. He attended a public school, and as a young man, he began to work under difficult conditions and without any work satisfaction. When World War II broke out, he left his parents’ home and fled to the other side of the border. He reached the city of Chernihiv, in Ukraine, and when the German army drew nearer to Chernihiv as well, he joined the Polish army and participated in the liberation of Poland. At the end of his military service, he joined a Hachsharah (agricultural training) program in Bedzin. He moved from there to Germany, awaiting the opportunity to immigrate to the Land of Israel.

Eliezer arrived in Israel during the War of Independence and was immediately recruited into the army’s Negev Brigade. As an experienced soldier, he didn’t need too much training. During Operation Yoav, which aimed to secure a route through the Negev, his unit attacked the Arab village of Iraq al-Manshiyya. He fell in this battle, on the 13th day of Tishri, 5709 (October 16, 1948).
