Monuments

Two monuments were established in memory of the Jews of Hrubieszow, designed and built by Avraham Zilberstein, who lost most of his family in the Holocaust.

The Monument at Nahalat Yitzhak

In the 1960s, a memorial was erected in the Nahalat Yitzhak cemetery in memory of the victims of the community.
The monument incorporates stones resembling the tombstones from the cemetery in Hrubieszow.
A copper star protrudes from the tombstone, accompanied by a copper cylinder containing a scroll with the names of Hrubieszow Jews who were murdered in the Holocaust.
Community members used to hold an annual gathering near this monument to commemorate their loved one.

The Monument in Hrubieszow

In 1997, a memorial was built on the grounds of the Hrubieszow cemetery, at the site where the town’s Jews were murdered by the Germans and their Polish collaborators. The monument was built next to the mass grave where the bodies of Hrubieszow Jews were buried.
The memorial incorporates fragments of tombstones that were found scattered in the streets of the town. These fragments were removed and relocated to the memorial site.

Words of Avraham Zilberstein During the Construction of the Monument in Hrubieszow – March 1997

“I came here from Israel to build a monument in memory of the Jewish Holocaust victims. I lived in this town, Hrubieszow, until 1934, and after completing my studies that year, I left for Palestine.
World War II and its horrific consequences caused me to lose all contact with the place where I spent my childhood.

Today, after 63 years of absence, I returned here with a heavy and painful heart. My goal was to establish a memorial site for the Jewish victims of Hrubieszow, as per a plan approved in advance by the Polish authorities.

I traveled to a ‘foreign’ country to create a memorial site that depicts the most shocking catastrophe in human history. Although I am a war veteran and have experienced many battlefields, this mission was a heavy burden for me.

I traveled with my friend, Shalom Omri, my partner in this sorrowful endeavor. Thanks to his skills and connections with the local authorities, as well as his previous visits to Hrubieszow, the groundwork was prepared for our mission.
My concerns dissipated. We received all the assistance we needed, without any obstacles. The difficult task was completed within three weeks. I am deeply grateful for the friendly and helpful hands extended to us in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The memorial site consists of three parts

A concave concrete wall with fragments of tombstones embedded in its front.

The back wall , made up of six sections, symbolizing the six million victims.

Two parallel rows of slanted tombstones lead up to the wall, representing the entry to the gas chambers.”
