The Hrubieszow Jewish settlement

“Hrubieszow’s Jewish community wasn’t like any other city. It was a city that fought, struggled, a built. All of the social and cultural currents in Jewish intellectual life could be found here, and its residents included Torah scholars, proponents of the Haskala movement (Reform Judaism), Zionists and socialists. This multifaceted mosaic was the foundation for Jewish public life in Hrubieszow, where our parents were inculcated with a love of the Jewish people, a sense devotion and loyalty, and a volunteering spirit.”
Excerpted from the preface to Pinkas Hrubieszow: Memorial to a Jewish Community in Poland, by Baruch Kaplinski

This site was created to commemorate the glorious past of the Jewish community of Hrubieszow, shedding light on its historical development, customs and traditions, notable figures, and public and political life, both within the community and in relation to local non-Jewish Poles. Established back in the 15th century by a group of diligent, educated and deeply-rooted Jews, the community flourished until the 20th century, when it was rapidly decimated during a series of unspeakably horrific and barbaric events that resulted in the first modern mass murder of European Jews – the Holocaust.

Our association was established to fill the void left by the Holocaust on the Jewish diaspora, aiming to forge a connection to an uprooted community that had lost its members.

The Goals of the Organization

1. The commemoration of the Jews of Hrubieszow who were exterminated by the Nazis and their helpers in the Holocaust. The commemoration will take place in Poland, the place of their execution, in Israel and in any country where the descendants of the residents of the city of Hrubieszow live.

2. Funding and carrying out commemorative actions such as preserving sites to commemorate the murdered, holding events, ceremonies, editing and financing publications and more.

3. Maintaining the connection with the “Sharett campus”- high school in Holon which has taken upon itself to deal with the Holocaust in general and commemorate the Jewry of Hrubieszow in particular.

4. Cultivating ties between the descendants of the people of the city of Hrubieszow in Israel and around the world by creating a community.
